Overview

Brett Stanley is an associate on the Energy Industry Team in the firm’s Chicago office.

Brett represents institutional investors, lenders and companies in the renewable energy sector in connection with the financing of wind, solar and battery energy storage projects, primarily through tax equity and back-leverage debt transactions. He drafts, negotiates and reviews primary and ancillary project finance transaction documents and facilitates legal due diligence. Brett acts as liaison between his client and subject matter experts, contractors, consultants and opposing counsel to ensure a smooth transaction.

Brett is a member of Out at Sheppard and the firm’s Artificial Intelligence Industry team. He maintains a robust pro bono practice, with particular emphasis on immigration and civil rights matters.

Prior to joining Sheppard, Brett worked for a Big Four accounting firm in San Francisco, where he focused on U.S. federal income tax considerations in connection with domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions. He is an avid Michigan football fan, experienced traveler and amateur baker.

  • Represented the sponsor in connection with a $1.31 billion tax equity investment in a 1.5-gigawatt portfolio comprising five wind, solar and battery energy storage projects located in California, New York, Oklahoma and Texas.
  • Represented the sponsor in connection with the $624 million tax equity financing of a three-phase, 577-megawatt solar project located in Ohio.
  • Represented the borrower in connection with the $1.51 billion equipment supply loan financing of battery energy storage, wind power and solar power equipment located in Alabama, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Wyoming and to be deployed for future installations.
  • Represented the owner participant with respect to a construction loan and sale-leaseback transaction with respect to a portfolio of five SMART program projects in Massachusetts.
