Overview
Garrett is an associate in the Vorys Columbus office and a member of the firm’s litigation group, with a practice focused on complex litigation and appeals. He is one of only 26 attorneys certified as an Appellate Law Specialist by the Ohio State Bar Association.
Garrett leverages his expertise in the field when litigating matters before Ohio and federal appellate courts, including the Supreme Court of Ohio. As part of his appellate practice, he has assisted clients in successfully opposing jurisdiction in the Supreme Court of Ohio and in persuading the court to accept jurisdiction over cases presenting important legal issues. He has also litigated original actions before the court, including matters on the court’s expedited elections docket, and successfully defended against such writs.
Prior to joining Vorys, Garrett gained extensive legal experience at the state level. He served as an assistant attorney general for the Ohio Attorney General’s Office, working in the office’s Constitutional Offices and Executive Agencies sections. He prosecuted administrative proceedings on behalf of state agencies, represented Ohio’s officeholders and offices in high-profile and politically sensitive litigation, and litigated cases presenting sophisticated and novel federal and state constitutional issues.
Garrett later clerked for the Honorable Chief Justice Sharon Kennedy of the Supreme Court of Ohio, where he prepared merit opinion drafts and bench memos for oral argument cases, reviewed and analyzed jurisdictional memoranda before the Court and assisted the Chief Justice in her administrative and constitutional duties over Ohio courts.
Garrett serves on the Supreme Court of Ohio’s Commission on the Rules of Practice and Procedure, where he assists in reviewing and recommending amendments to the rules governing practice and procedure in Ohio courts. He also chairs the Ohio State Bar Association’s Federal Courts and Practice Committee and sits as vice chair of the City of Dublin Board of Zoning Appeals.
Garrett received his J.D. magna cum laude from Capital University Law School, where he worked on the staff for the Capital University Law Review. While in law school, he served as a judicial extern for Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor of the Supreme Court of Ohio. He received his B.S. magna cum laude from Ohio University.
